How to Add Google Reviews to Your Website (3 Free Ways)

It's 2024 and adding Google Reviews to your website is still frustrating. What can you do about it?

Google itself doesn't offer an easy way to embed your reviews on your website. And many popular solutions cost $5 to $50 a month or more.

So in this article, I'll show you 3 free methods for adding Google reviews to your website. Let's dive right in!

How do I add Google Reviews to my website?

You have a several options for adding Google Reviews to any website. I'll go over each option now and give you the pro's and con's, as well as which option I recommend in terms of cost saving, quality, and ease-of-use.

Option 1. Manually Embed Reviews

The simplest and cheapest way to add Google Reviews to your website is to do so manually. Here's how you can do it.

Step 1. Go to your Google My Business profile

Log into your Google account that manages the business profile. Click on the "Google apps" icon in the upper righthand corner to open the dropdown menu.

If you don't see the "Business Profile Manager" option, scroll to the bottom of the dropdown and click on "More from Google".

Step 2. Copy your Google reviews you want to embed

Google business profile reviewsNext, view your Google reviews

Once on your business profile page, click on your Google reviews section.

This will open a popup which will display all your reviews.

From here, you can choose reviews that you want to embed and copy them.

Step 3. Paste the Google reviews onto your website

In your website editor, HTML templates, or CMS, you can then paste the Google reviews to add them to your website.

How you accomplish this step will depend on how your website is setup.

It may be tricky to manually add the reviews to your site if you are not a web developer, which is why this option works best for smaller sites or if you only have a few reviews you want to embed.

Pros of manually embedding your Google reviews:

  • It's completely free
  • It works well for smaller sites or if you only have a few reviews

Cons of manually embedding your Google reviews:

  • Copy/pasting your reviews takes time and is tedious
  • You have to manually update your reviews when you get new ones
  • You may not be a web developer or web designer, so making the reviews look nice is tricky

For these reasons, there are many widgets which let you embed Google Reviews more easily.

Let's explore using a traditional Google review widget as our second option for adding Google reviews to your website.

Option 2. Use a Traditional Google Review Widget

For website owners who don't want to manually copy and paste their Google reviews, there are Google review widgets.

Google review widgets are small pieces of code that you put onto your website, which automatically displays your reviews.

To setup a traditional Google review widget, you will typically follow these steps:

Step 1. Sign up or create your account

You can choose from a variety of traditional Google review widgets available (I've listed the popular ones below).

Signup for a traditional Google review widgetHow to signup for a traditional Google review widget

After signing up, you will need to add your Google business location.

Step 2. Enter your Google My Business name or find your place ID

Most traditional Google review widgets make you find your "Google Place ID".

Huh? If you're like me, most business owners have never heard of such a thing.

And I don't blame you. Your Google Place ID is very tricky to find, especially if you have an online business without a physical address.

Finding your Google Place ID is confusingFinding your Google Place ID or Google Maps Embed Code can be confusing

Especially if you have an online business, using a traditional Google review widget can be a real pain to setup. That's why I'll share an easier alternative below.

But assuming that you manage to find your hidden, tricky-to-find Google Place ID, you can move onto the next step.

Step 3. Customize your layout and perfect your widget

Depending on the traditional Google review widget you've chosen, you will be able to customize your widget.

Some widget providers allow more customization than others, such as multiple layouts, CSS, and JS capabilities.

Step 4. Add the widget to your website

Now you're ready to actually add reviews to your website. You will need to copy and paste a small piece of code onto your site.

But wait, there's more...?

Step 5. Realize that it's not actually free, unless you have a very small number of users per month 😨

Deceptive pricingNot very generous free plan + even more expensive as you grow

The problem with the vast majority of other Google review widgets out there, is that they require a monthly subscription.

Do you, as a business owner really want another monthly expense chipping away at your bottom line?

But what's worse: you are punished for growing your website, because most traditional Google review widgets will cost you more as you get more users.

In fact, this popular Google review widget (see above image) only gives you a measly 200 free views per month.

As promised earlier, here's several traditional Google review widgets you can choose from, including:

  • Elfsight
  • Trustmary
  • Trusthero

And others...

Just be willing to cough up $5 to $50 or more per month, pay more as your site grows, and be locked into yet another monthly subscription.

Pros of traditional Google review widgets:

  • Easy to set up
  • Automatically displays and styles reviews (no web designer needed)
  • Automatically fetches new reviews when you get them

Cons of traditional Google review widgets:

  • Costs anywhere from $5 to $50 or more, per month
  • You often pay more as your traffic increases
  • There's usually not API access, so your developer (if you have one) can't make a fully custom widget
  • Finding your Google My Business place ID or the right link can be super confusing, especially if your business doesn't have a physical address like many online businesses nowadays
  • And did I mention that you have to pay for anything over 500 users per month most of the time? The free plans are often very restrictive

So that brings me to what I believe is the best solution for adding Google reviews to any website, for free.
